micro ct scanning

Micro Computerised Tomography

What is micro CT?

A non-invasive and non-destructive way to look inside objects.

Micro CT (μCT) uses x-rays to reveal internal and external features of an object to a resolution of 5 - 100µm, about 10 - 100times smaller than medical CT.

Works on any object around the size of a basketball, or slightly taller if done in multiple scans.

The "Quick Split"

Here we see the real bones separated from the artificial "matrix".

Dorsal Slice View

CT slices from the top down, revealing the scale of reconstruction.

How it works

Looking at the Above Diagram

A - B:    microCT scan
Provides both a high-res surface and internal scan of your object.

We charge £40 per hour (exc VAT) of "beam time". Most scans are between 1 and 3 hours.
.

B - B*:   The "Quick Spilt"

Removes lower density components from your object (eg: matrix from a fossil)

[density grade dependent]
.

B - C:   Full Segmentation
Complete removal of your object from other components
[not density grade dependent]

We charge £25 an hour (exc VAT) for this "digital preparation". Think of it as digital high precision fossil preparation that doesn't damage the fossil. Results and time taken to complete are of course dependant on the scope of the task and the clarity of the scan data. The end result can also be 3D printed.

Get in Touch

μCT may seem a complex subject, but we are here to help explain the whole process.

If you have any further questions about the process or what you could do with a scan of your object, please get in touch with us at:

info@neojurassica.org

how to use the service

Our Imaging Lab is based at the Yorkshire Natural History Museum in Sheffield, UK.

Simply send an email to info@neojurassica.org to book and send your object(s) in the post or visit us in-person, anyone is welcome.

THE "QUICK SCAN"

Getting More out of a Scan

A Quick Scan includes a 60 minute μCT scan and 15 minute processing service. Rather than just getting the raw data you shall receive a Hi-Res 3D model, technician support and a Quick Split model! [density grade dependent]

Unique Affordability

A Quick Scan is only £60 (inc VAT).

A Neo Jurassica Exclusive

The Quick Scan service is only available from Neo Jurassica, the only affordable μCT service of its kind available to anyone whether an amateur collector, in industry or a researcher.
