SSSIs are areas of land designated by Natural England to be of significant scientific importance on a national scale. Sites can be designated for their impact on British wildlife, geology and landforms. All three of these categories have an impact on palaeontological excavation.
All SSSI designated sites have legal protection in the UK and require both the consent of Natural England and the landowner to be excavated. Neo Jurassica requires this consent in writing either via letter or email before works can begin. Wildlife SSSIs in addition require an Ecological Survey to be completed to assess the long-term implications of excavation.
Geological Conservation Review (GCR) sites contain geological and geomorphological features of national and international importance. They are selected through a process known as the Geological Conservation Review.
Neo Jurassica adheres to the standing advice and guidance for operating in GCR sites.
